Tattoos done with professional needles show that ink usually penetrates to the superficial area of the dermis called the papillary region.

Amateur tattoos, on the other hand, differ greatly one from another. Tattoo inks can be seen in the papillary region but also in the deeper layers, and sometimes even in the fatty subcutaneous tissues.

The most problematic tattoos are the multicolored ones because different colours require the use of different wavelengths. Greens are usually still visible even after numerous sessions. Red and black inks can be removed generally pretty well. Red inks usually contain mercury, cadmium or iron. Blacks often contain carbon or iron oxide, blues cobalt, greens chrome and whites titanium. With size and composition, absorption and reflection, making all these pigments disappear requires several laser procedures.
